Two centuries of years at a glance

Every year from 1900 to 2099 shares one of two openings. From 1900 to 1999 the numeral begins with MCM, one thousand plus nine hundred, and the letters after it carry the rest of the year. From 2000 onward it begins with MM, two thousands, which is why modern dates are so much shorter to write than twentieth-century ones. The switch from MCMXCIX (1999) to MM (2000) is the biggest single drop in length the calendar has seen in a thousand years.

Because the opening is fixed within each century, reading a year off a datestone or a set of credits comes down to the letters after the band. On a building dated MCMXLV, the MCM tells you it is the 1900s and the XLV tells you the year is 1945.

The years people actually search

This chart exists for dates, not sums.
