Roman numerals that multiply to 35
V × VII = 35, so the Roman numerals that multiply to 35 are V (5) and VII (7). Leaving out I, which multiplies by 1, they are the only pair with that product, because 35 is 5 times 7 and both of those factors are prime. Paste an answer or any other text into the checker below to see what its numerals multiply to.
Check your numerals
Every run of numeral letters counts as one numeral, and capital runs count inside longer words too, so helloXXXVworld reads as XXXV. Untick Count capitals inside words to read whole words only. The checker shows each value, the sum, the product and whether the product is 35.
A numeral is any run of the capital letters I, V, X, L, C, D and M, also inside a longer word: helloXXXVworld reads XXXV, and the M of Mix counts as 1,000. Turn off Count capitals inside words to read whole words only. Strict skips English words that are also valid numerals, such as I, MIX and DID. Nothing you paste is saved or sent.

Why V and VII
35 has exactly four divisors: 1, 5, 7 and 35. As numerals those are I, V, VII and XXXV. So the only ways to write 35 as a product are I × XXXV and V × VII, plus any number of extra I's. Because 5 and 7 are both prime, neither can be split into smaller factors, which is why no third combination exists.
XXXV on its own is already 35
XXXV is a single numeral: X + X + X + V = 35. If one numeral is allowed, XXXV gives 35 with no multiplication at all. If you need two or more numerals, V and VII is the only answer that does not lean on I.
I multiplies by 1
Multiplying by I leaves any product unchanged, so I × V × VII and I × XXXV are both 35 as well. The checker counts I like any other numeral, and you can watch the sum go up by one while the product stays put. If a rule asks for numerals other than I, leave it out.
Keep the numerals apart
Letters with nothing between them are read as one numeral. VVII is not V followed by VII: it is one string of four letters, and it is not a valid numeral, because V is never repeated. Swapping the order does not help, since VIIV is not valid either. Put a space, a comma or a multiplication sign between the two, and V VII, V, VII and V×VII all read as two numerals.
A lowercase letter keeps numerals apart as well. The checker on this page counts runs of capitals inside longer words, so helloXXXVworld reads as XXXV and VxVII as V and VII, both 35. The flip side is that a capital in an ordinary word is a numeral too: the M of Mix adds a factor of 1,000, so check the letters around your answer.
Why IV or XL change the product
A smaller numeral written before a larger one is subtracted, and the pair becomes a single numeral. IV is 4, not I and V, so IV VII multiplies 4 by 7 and gives 28. Write the letters apart, as I V VII, and the product is 1 × 5 × 7 = 35 again. XL works the same way: it is 40, never X times L. Spacing changes the reading too: XXX V is 30 × 5 = 150, while XXXV is 35.

Frequently asked questions
Which Roman numerals multiply to 35?
V and VII, because 5 × 7 = 35. XXXV on its own is also 35, and you can add I as often as you like (I × V × VII = 35), since multiplying by 1 changes nothing. Leaving I out, V and VII are the only numerals whose product is 35.
Why is IV × VII not 35?
IV is a single numeral worth 4, because an I placed before V is subtracted from it. 4 × 7 = 28. To use I and V as separate factors, write them apart: I V VII is 1 × 5 × 7 = 35.
Can I write V and VII together as VVII?
No. Letters with nothing between them are read as one numeral, and VVII is not a valid one, because V is never repeated. VIIV is not valid either. Separate the two with a space, a comma, a multiplication sign or a lowercase letter.
Is XXXV the same as V × VII?
They have the same value, 35, but they are built differently. XXXV adds its letters (10 + 10 + 10 + 5), while V × VII multiplies two separate numerals. Which one fits depends on whether you need a single numeral or several.
Does the checker keep what I paste?
No. The text stays in your browser while the page is open and is read there. Nothing you paste is saved or sent.
